RimRock Ranch

RimRock ranch is located in the scenic Pine Ridge country of northwest Nebraska.  The ranch lies along an escarpment with prominent vertical cliffs which give the ranch its name.  On its southern boundary, it shares a two mile long ridgeline with the historic Fort Robinson State Park.  This is an area where one is surrounded by the Old West.

Buffalo, long absent from these grasslands, have once again returned to range over the RimRock's wide open meadows and up the many long fingers which climb to the top of its 400 - 500 ft. ridge.  Established in 1968, our buffalo herd consists of well established family groups of all ages that graze large grassland pastures.  We utilize a rotational grazing program which strives to provide optimal quality forage while also maintaining optimal health of pastures and the natural ecosystem.  We do not artificially wean calves but rather we let the buffalo follow their natural cycles.  We feel that nature has provided a system which is most appropriate for the long-term physical and social health of the herd.

RIMROCK BUFFALO HUNTS

RimRock buffalo hunts can be scheduled from September through January.  If a prime robe is a consideration the best time lies approx. mid-November through mid-January, but the meat will be excellent from July through February.  The two and a half year old bulls we harvest for meat have been born and raised in their natural grassland habitat.  We keep our management practices as low stress as possible.  Field harvest allows each animal to live its life in a natural environment without the stress of excess handling and transportation.  This allows a sustainable harvest with greater respect for the animal.  It also provides the highest quality of meat with all its natural health benefits.

The hunter should look on this act as a harvest of high quality game meat and not a hunt in the sense of a white tail deer hunt.  Our buffalo are used to humans being around and have little fear of people.  It is wise, however, to always keep in mind that buffalo are powerful wild animals with very quick movements and sometimes unpredictable behavior so we believe in taking precautions to assure the safety of our hunters.

HUNT FEES

For the upcoming 2007-2008 hunt season the cost of a two and half year old bull hunt is $1650, and a three and half year old bull is $2000.  A deposit of $500 is required to book a hunt.  Please check with us first for availability of animals and dates.  This includes the entire animal - meat, head, skull, and hide.  The hunt also includes two nights lodging and meals.  Skinning, taxidermy, hide tanning and meat processing fees are not included. We will, however, help make such arrangement at your request.

LODGING

RimRock Ranch has a rustic log guest ranch house with two guest bedrooms.  An additional "bunk house" type sleeping area can also be arranged in the outer great-room around the huge central fire place.  The hunt includes two nights "bed & breakfast" type lodging with meals, a spouse and children may come along at no extra charge.  Arrangements may also be made for additional lodging and meals if you wish to extend your stay (depending on availability and other bookings) or include other non-hunting companions in your party.
